Millions of people quit their jobs in 2021. But many of them didn’t think about how they were going to explain that to their next potential employer.
If you are part of the Great layoff and not sure how to explain why you quit your job during an interview, follow these tips.
If you’re asked in a job interview why you quit your last job, don’t say anything overly negative. If you’re too negative, the hiring manager will think, “Well, if you’re so negative about your last employer, you’ll stop with us too if you have any problems with us.” You don’t want to label yourself as a quitter. But at the same time you can’t lie because you did resign.
If you get a new job before you quit your old one, that’s fine. The problem comes when you quit your job and you don’t have a job. So, how do you explain your decision to quit without being negative or alarming potential employers?
Use the “Experience + Learning = Growing” model
The solution is to learn how to answer this interview question using the “Experience + Learning = Growing” model. I have been teaching this strategy to job seekers for years. It is a way for you to explain the facts objectively. What happened? What led to the desire to leave? Explain why you stopped and what you learned from the experience so that you never put yourself in that position again. Employers need to hear that you learned something valuable from this experience. You have to put a very positive, proactive spin on it.
You also need to end on a high note. Your explanation must be authentic. It cannot be invented. Hiring managers can see right through that. Nor can it be overly negative. You need to use that objective storytelling process, “Experience + Learning = Growing,” to effectively explain your situation to employers.
Knowing how to explain why you are giving up a job in an interview will be very important as you move forward with your job search. If you don’t explain yourself properly, employers won’t trust you. They will worry that you will stop if you don’t like what is happening in their company.
It is very expensive to hire people to make them leave. So companies in the future will be very judicious about who they hire because they don’t want you to quit again. So be careful. Learn the right thing to say and you’ll be one step closer to finding a new job.
