Raise. If the boss doesn’t give, will you leave?

One morning, many weeks ago, I was listening to the radio when the question of the bonus came up. After working so hard for 2021, wouldn’t people expect something from their bosses? Bonus is all about past performance and results while salary increase is about future expected performance. Let’s talk about bonus first. The DJ asked for comment from the listeners.

Most callers who called / left a message said they don’t expect a bonus because their company management said Covid-19 was a big problem. So the business condition was difficult. One called even said that bonus has been missing since 2020 and expects 2021 to be the same. One called and said business seems fine but somehow management said there would be no bonus.

In fact, it is too late to do anything if the bonus is indeed not given. But what about a salary increase?

Article in thesundaily.my In a Mercer (Total Remuneration Survey) survey of 544 organizations, 97% of which are multinational corporations (MNCs), the companies forecast an average increase in total salaries of 4.5% for 2022. These multinationals come from 10 different sectors.

This 4.5% is below the Asia-Pacific average of 5.4%. For variable bonuses, employers in Malaysia are giving an average bonus payout of 2.2 months for 2021. This is just over 2.1 months in 2020. Across the region, Pakistan (9%) reported the highest salary increase, while Japan’s estimate for 2022 is the lowest at 2.3%. Read full details here: Article in thesundaily.my

What if no salary increase is given?

If no raise is given, it might be a good time to think and decide if the current company is indeed the best place to stay. The reason is simple. When there are so many other companies handing out raises, it might be wiser to move there. What if we can’t get another job and have to continue with our current job?

Then it’s time to really understand why this is happening. Is it because of our work experience? If so, maybe it’s time we do more, learn more, and potentially achieve more.

If it’s because of academic qualification, then it’s time we upgrade our current qualification. Many jobs continue to require a degree because they have a salary range that is also determined by a minimum academic qualification. This is a reality, we have to do something about it, because complaining gets us nowhere.

If we have both the work experience and the academic qualification, but we still can’t get a job…. then maybe it’s just our communication capacity. Honestly…if there are jobs that give bonuses and raises and we’re stuck in a job with no bonuses and raises, then maybe the problem isn’t with the job or the company or the boss. It’s really up to us to do something productive about it. The truth hurts, but at least now we can take steps to change for the better. All the best for 2022.
